Pollution is poison! Pollution is problematic!
Around the world, pollution has been a global issue for hundreds of years. As human populations have grown, it has increased the amount of waste put out into the world. It starts when a harmful material is brought into the environment. Garbage, substances, and other energies contribute to polluting the world we live in.
Cities became more popular towards the end of the 19th century. These new, industrialized cities across the world were experiencing pollution from industries and factories. Rivers and other bodies of water became contaminated by industrial chemicals and wastes. The toxic substances were dissolved and mixed with the water. Water pollution is a result of human activities bringing contaminants to the natural environment.
Air pollution continued to increase during the 20th century. It is caused by the solid and liquid particles that come from gases held in the air. Automobiles, industrial processes, factories, dust, pollen, and wildfires contribute to the particles flying around in the air we breathe. Major fires erupt and cause sparks, debris, and oils to travel through the air.
“The Clean Air Act of 1990 sets limits on the discharge of air pollutants from industrial facilities and motor vehicles…”Â
Actions you can take to reduce pollution:
- Reduce the number of trips you take in your car: carpool, use public transportation, bike or walk whenever possible- Eliminates greenhouse gases!
- Turn off the lights when you leave your room and take advantage of natural light during the day- Saves electricity!
- Opt for reusable bags and containers- Plastic bags ultimately end up in landfills or other parts of the environment.
The widespread problem of polluted water and air effects our health. As a community, we can come together to make a difference and help our environment. We can take control and everyone can make a difference! Do your part!
Skylar,
We are ready to do our part…
