Finding my first sand dollar at my hometown beach put the biggest smile on my face. And little did I know, they are so much more than thin, white discs found on the beach.
What is so special about sand dollars? Spiritually, sand dollars bring peace and creativity. They signify growth, such as finding your own path in life through strength, flexibility, and freedom.
About Sand Dollars
- Sand dollars are related to sea stars and sea urchins.
- They are living organism underwater. At this point in their life, they are a purple-reddish color. When they are washed up onto coastal beaches, they turn white from getting dried out by the sun, meaning there is no life left in the organism.
- Their body is displayed spherically, with 5-part symmetry (that looks like a flower).
Found in Morro Bay, California. The beach, just right of the Morro Rock is covered with sand dollars. If you are ever traveling through the central coast, check it out!
Next time you are taking a stroll on the beach (or any coastal area around the world), look out for sand dollars. If the symbolism behind these creatures resonates with you, I hope it brings a smile to your face. But be sure that the creature isn’t alive before taking it home.
