Mask + Acne = Maskne
Maskne: “acne or other skin irritation that results from wearing a mask.”
The trend of the term ‘maskne’ arose during the Covid-19 outbreak because of the constant wearing of face masks to protect against the virus. It is a real thing (according to many dermatologist)! We can find maskne in the specific areas covered by a face mask, such as the bridge of your nose, your cheeks and your chin.

How Does Maskne Happen?
Maskne is caused by the sweat, skin oils, and other bacterias trapped on your face by wearing a mask. When the mask rubs against your skin it can cause the surface to break out and become irritated. One dermatologist stated, “while breathing for hours with the mask on, it creates humidity to [form] a breeding ground for acne.” She explained that the rubbing between the skin and mask blocks and clogs pores.
What Can You Do To Prevent Maskne?
Taking care of your skin is a must to help avoid maskne. Exfoliating and moisturizing often is a good start. And washing or replacing your face masks almost daily will be beneficial.
More specifically, developing maskne does not mean suddenly be rough on your skin. Gentle is key! Here are some tips to follow from experts and dermatologists:
- Avoid drying out your skin
- Use a face wash with salicylic acid – this helps remove dirt, dead skin cells, and oils from your pores (Try the recommended, Neutrogena Proofing Gel Facial Cleanser. It is less than $10 and can also be bought at CVS. OR the CeraVe Renewing SA Cleanser )
- Hydrate after washing (Try the recommended, Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel-Cream, which can be bought at Ulta, Target, and more. OR the CeraVe Moisturizing Cream )
- Treat the acne breakout with spot treatments or products that resolve the clogged pores (Try the recommended: Differin Acne Treatment Gel. )
- Do not over wash or treat your skin

Note: With sports teams returning to practice, there is a requirement to wear masks. This will definitely build up sweat and lead to acne breakouts. So, be aware and ready to treat your skin properly.
